A Few Safety Tips For Families

We caught up with safety expert Tom Patire while he was on his Training For Life tour. We asked Tom to give us some general safety tips for all families:
  • In An Emergency – call 911. If you cannot talk, just drop the phone. Emergency response people will trace the call and find you. Never hang up!
  • Lost Child – stand still and shout for him/her at your height level and then that of the child you are looking for. Don’t cup your hands around your mouth and shout upwards – a small child will not hear you. Don’t be in a rush to move around because most lost kids are found within 20 feet of where they were last spotted.
  • Create A Safe Zone – before going anywhere, especially a crowded place, determine a “Safe Zone” for a child to go to in case of need. In a mall or shopping area, choose a women’s clothing store. That is the best place that he/she will find someone that will listen and take the time to help them.
  • Abduction – pay attention to the look of your child and what they wear, especially the child’s shoes. Unlike other clothing, shoes are generally not thrown away by the abductor.
  • If Attacked – listen to what they say. Give your attacker any material possession they want; it’s not worth losing your life over. And never verbally insult or psychologically try and save them. The more time you are in the attacker’s presence, the greater risk to you and your family members.
