Tom's Tips

To Be Aware

As the world grapples with the question of how to protect innocent civilians from terrorist groups, neighborhood gangs, and individual criminals who are willing to inflict harm or even kill in order to achieve their objectives, it becomes more and more impossible to ignore our need to take personal responsibility for our own safety and that of our families. If educating ourselves about personal safety was once an option, it is now, without doubt, a responsibility. Having said that, here are some of Tom’s Tips in regards to vehicle and parking lot safety that can aid you and the people you care about to live a safer, more aware lifestyle.

Safer Vehicle

- If you think you are being followed, remain calm and stay visible on well-traveled streets. Never drive directly home! Go to a police station or a populated area to increase your visibility.

- When driving on a highway, use the middle lane and make sure you stay away from the divider. Carjackers work in teams in many cases and usually box you into the shoulder to slow you down so they can steal your car.

- If you see another driver flashing his lights as an indication for you to pull over, go to a public area such as a convenience store or police department and pull over only when other people are in close view.

Safer Parking

- When leaving or returning to your car, walk through the most well-lit and populated areas.

- Prior to entering your car, have your keys in hand and constantly scan the area to show people that you are watching and are alert to what is around you.

- If you have any sense of danger when parking or returning to your vehicle, follow your instincts. Retreat to the nearest safety zone until you are sure the area is secure, or call the police for an escort.
