Keeping Your Child Safe At School
Here are some of Tom’s Tips® from America’s Leading Personal Safety Expert® and author of the top-selling Personal Protection Handbook:
Tom Patire:
- Make sure all outside doors are closed and locked during school hours. Most schools have a buzzer system that allows visitors to identify themselves through an intercom and get buzzed in. Higher-tech systems consist of a small covert camera by the door, with a monitor in the office that allows the person inside to see who is there and then buzzed in. This system is cost-effective and makes the school a safer haven for our children.
- Make sure that all classroom doors are kept closed during class so that teachers will be more aware of someone walking into her class.
- Implement a customized ID and pass program, in which staff have identification cards with a photo and the school logo. Guests would sign in and receive a pass, which they would have to wear on the premises and return when they leave. Institute a system for keeping track of these passes so that they don’t fall into the wrong hands.
- Make sure that the halls are monitored either by teachers or other staff specially trained for that purpose.
- Make sure ALL children and school personnel are trained on how and when to make a 911 call.
- Develop and implement a plan of action for dealing with strangers inside the school or on the school premises.
- Train designated, responsible school personnel to act as a response team in case of a violent encounter or an abduction.
*Make sure that a staff member or teacher that goes on a class trip with the students has training in CPR and Emergency First Aid.
